Stop Benefit Double Dipping: Introduced H.R. 1502
As a part of my on-going efforts to protect precious hard-earned taxpayer dollars, I have introduced a common sense bill, H.R. 1502, “The Social Security Disability Insurance and Unemployment Benefits Double Dip Elimination Act of 2013.” This bill would stop people from receiving disability insurance benefits at the same time they are receiving unemployment benefits. Someone cannot be “able and available” to work and also unable to work due to a disability. This isn’t right, and it doesn’t make sense. We need to put a stop to waste, fraud, and abuse and ensure that the disability program is there for those who truly cannot work.
House Ways and Means Committee Activity
Ways & Means Markup: H.R. 807
|
|
Last Wednesday, the Ways and Means Committee considered and passed H.R. 807, “Full Faith and Credit Act.” This bill would take default off the table by making sure Uncle Sam makes good on its debt payments in the event the debt limit is not increased. The bill, which does not increase the debt limit, would also make sure that seniors can still get their Social Security checks. For the sake of the country's economic future, the President and Senate Democrats should abandon their failed tax and spend approach and instead work with House Republicans to responsibly get our fiscal house in order. |
Ways & Means Full Committee Hearing: Housing Tax Provisions
| As part of its tax reform hearing series, last Thursday, the Ways and Means Committee held a hearing on tax reform and residential real estate. As Chairman of the Real Estate Working Group, I have held various meetings with folks locally and in D.C. on such tax provisions as the mortgage interest deduction and the deduction for state and local property taxes. Having been a homebuilder, I know the important role housing plays in our economy and that homeownership embodies the American Dream. |

Social Security Subcommittee Hearing: Next Commissioner of Social Security
As Chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security, I held a hearing last Friday on the challenges facing the next Commissioner of Social Security. With 10,000 baby boomers retiring every day and millions of Americans applying for disability benefits, in part due to the poor economy, Social Security has its work cut out in effectively serving the American people during these tight budget times.
Texas Update
SMU Welcome Ceremony for the George Bush Presidential Center
What a pleasure to see former First Lady Laura Bush at the SMU Welcome Ceremony for the George Bush Presidential Center on Friday, April 19. I was incredibly impressed with the new library, a fitting tribute to a great President.
The 49th Greater Dallas Military Ball
 |
As a 29-year Air Force Veteran, there is no where I would have rather been than spending an evening with hundreds of men and women who faithfully support our troops. At the 49th Greater Dallas Military Ball, I awarded my dear friend and American patriot, Mr. Ross Perot, the Five Star Award for Courageous Leadership, in honor of his lifetime of service to our veterans, active troops, and fellow Texans. What a night of celebration - a true celebration of America, the glorious land of the free. We are blessed to call it home.
