IRS Chief Says No Thanks to ObamaCare
Yesterday, my colleagues and I questioned Acting-IRS Commissioner, Danny Werfel, at a Ways and Means Committee hearing on the implementation of Obamacare.  I think you’ll be please to know that I got the Acting IRS Commissioner to testify before Congress that EVEN HE does not want to participate in ObamaCare.  The head of the IRS, the agency in charge of implementing Obamacare, doesn’t even want it himself!  This simply speaks for itself.  It also violates Obama’s famous claim, “if you like your doctor or health care plan, then you can keep it.”

ObamaCare must be stopped. That's why I am a cosponsor of H.R. 2682, the Defund ObamaCare Act of 2013.

Stop Government Abuse Week (#StopGovtAbuse)

House Republicans stood together this week to re-empower citizens and restrain out-of-control federal agencies with the first “Stop Government Abuse Week.”  American families deserve to have their hard-earned money spent effectively and efficiently.  With the recent revelations of the outrageous abuse of the IRS, it’s clear that big government fails to protect the American people.  When government officials abuse their power on taxpayer’s dime, liberty and democracy pay the price – it is a slap in the face to all of those who served and are currently serving to keep America the standard of freedom.  Which is why, this week we stood together and said, NO!  That is not right, and we will not rest until the IRS and all government agencies are held accountable to serve the American taxpayer, not the other way around.

In fact, I voted for all 10 bills addressing these critical issues on the House floor.  I am also an original co-sponsor of the four bills listed below.

H.R. 2009 – “Keep the IRS Off Your Health Care” prohibits the IRS from implementing or enforcing any provisions of the President’s health care law.  Right now, the IRS has a role in nearly 50 different aspects of Obamacare.  That’s right, the agency that bullied Americans for exercising their right of free speech will be the very same agency involved in enforcing health care.  The choice of healthcare is personal – best made by patients and their doctors, not by Washington, and much less the IRS.

H.R. 2565 – “Stop Targeting Our Politics IRS Act”
would require termination of any IRS employees who use their official position for political purposes.

H.R. 2769 – “Stop Playing on Citizen’s Cash Act” ends IRS conferences until the Inspector General’s recommendations on preventing abuse and protecting taxpayer dollars are implemented. The lavish spending on conferences, gifts, and entertainment by the IRS must stop.

H.R. 2768 – “The Taxpayer Bill of Rights”
ensures the IRS Commissioner educates IRS employees on the rights of the American taxpayer, such as the right to privacy and confidentiality.  Employees must act in accordance with these rights or be held accountable.

Amash Amendment, NSA Program

As a part of the Department of Defense Appropriations bill, Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) proposed an amendment last week to completely eliminate the National Security Administration’s (NSA) ability to gather foreign intelligence information.  Prohibiting the NSA from gathering any data – or metadata (which does not include the actual content of phones calls) - would leave our country vulnerable to more terrorist attacks. The world continues to be a dangerous place, we can’t afford to take risks like that.  Some folks are worried that the government is overlooking their personal privacy. Like many, I too have concerns about NSA programs, and I agree the privacy of the American people must remain a priority.  However, Congress should consider modifications that protect these privacies without sacrificing our intelligence capabilities.  We must strike the proper balance.

60th Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice

Last Saturday, July 27, marked the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice.  As a fighter pilot who flew 62 combat missions in Korea and another 25 missions in Vietnam, I humbly ask that we never forget we are the land of the free because of the brave. Some have called the Korean War the “Forgotten War,” but I disagree.  The Korean War is a remembered war, not forgotten.    Spanning from 1950 to 1953, it represents America’s first efforts to stop Communism in Asia.  In many ways, Korea was the first reminder that America must remain the world’s leading force for peace, prosperity, and freedom. Today, South Korea is reaping the benefits of freedom and democracy due to those who bravely served.

To all the Korean War veterans – you are not forgotten.  Your service is remembered, appreciated, and honored.  God bless you and I salute you.
