WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to President Trump’s decision to impose new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports yesterday, U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson (TX-03) released the following statement:

“While I think the President is wrong to proceed with the tariffs on steel and aluminum, I do appreciate that he has heeded —though not completely — the concerns over his original tariff plan.

“Even so, the underlying problem with tariffs remains the same. Tariffs are taxes. I remain deeply concerned about the impact of the President’s decision on our economy and our relationships with our allies and partners.

“As a free market conservative, I believe we should encourage free trade with our allies, and I will continue to do what I can in Congress to see that this principle is upheld.”
