Today U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson (3rd Dist.-Texas) released the following statement on President George W. Bush’s speech last night.
In accepting our party’s nomination for a second term, Bush outlined key domestic priorities.
Specifically, Bush called for a simpler, fairer tax system, making health care more affordable, and creating personal retirement accounts for younger people to improve Social Security.
“Tonight President Bush advocated a clear vision for America and reminded the country why he’s ready to lead this nation for four more years.
“I look forward to working with the President to make these bold domestic priorities a reality to improve America for future generations.”
Tax Reform
“President Bush is right. Today’s ‘short’ form for taxes should not take 11 hours to prepare. It’s time we made our tax system fairer, simpler and shorter. Bold tax reform is the only way to go.”
*Every Congress Johnson introduces legislation to abolish the 16th amendment. Johnson believes the tax code must be eliminated to spark true reform.
Health Care
“We need to give people more affordable, more accessible health insurance options and Association Health Plans are the way to go. It’s up to the Senate to make this proposal a reality.”
*Last year, Johnson sponsored legislation to create Association Health Plans (AHPs). Under the proposal, groups may band together to purchase health insurance at more affordable prices.
Social Security
“Let’s be clear. President Bush will not change benefits for today’s retirees or soon-to-be-retirees. The President wants to see Social Security permanently strengthened for future generations without raising taxes.
“The President’s call for personal accounts for younger workers marks a bold step in the Social Security reform debate. Personal accounts help people build a nest egg for their retirement and to pass on to their spouse or their children. The freedom and the choice to save for retirement in a personal account represents the best way to improve Social Security.”
*This summer Johnson proposed legislation to strengthen Social Security with personal retirement accounts for younger generations.
